TOMAS VAN DE LAAK

Tomás van de Laak is een hedendaagse beeldhouwer en ruimtelijk kunstenaar met Rotterdam als belangrijk fundament voor zijn werk. Zijn oeuvre kenmerkt zich door een diepe interesse in de wisselwerking tussen vorm, materiaal en de omgeving waarin het kunstwerk staat.

Materialiteit en Vormtaal

De manier waarop structuren in de stad samenbreken en weer worden opgebouwd, reflecteert in zijn ruimtelijke composities. Zijn werk zoekt vaak het contrast op tussen strakke lijnen en organische vormen, wat past bij de energie van een haven- en architectuurstad.

Thematiek en Ruimtelijke Beleving

Een centraal thema in zijn werk is het ontstaan van ruimte en de aanwezigheid van de mens daarbinnen. Zijn beelden zijn niet enkel objecten op zichzelf, maar treden in dialoog met hun omgeving:

• Licht en schaduw: De val van het licht op de bewerkte oppervlakken bepaalt hoe een beeld gedurende de dag verandert.

• Massiviteit versus leegte: De fysieke begrenzing van het materiaal benadrukt juist de lege ruimte eromheen.

• Monumentaliteit: Zelfs op een kleiner formaat behouden zijn werken vaak een krachtige, monumentale uitstraling.

Met zijn eigenzinnige benadering van beeldhouwkunst levert Tomas van der Laak een waardevolle en eigentijdse bijdrage aan de moderne Nederlandse kunstwereld.

Tomás Florian van de Laak (Atelier TFL,1989) is a multidisciplinary visual artist from
Rotterdam with a background in fine arts and the traditional craft of shoemaking.
Rotterdam’s industrial heartbeat influences the artist's work both aesthetically and
conceptually. Tomás continuously evaluates his role as an artist in a city with a rampant
working-class mentality, where the immediate surroundings of his studio at Kunst &
Complex in the industrial area of M4H in Rotterdam are a direct influence to his work.
Fascinated by the surreal appearance of machines in increasingly digital and
incomprehensible global systems, combined with the urge to explore the space between fine
arts and functional objects, the artist reduces and exaggerates, simplifies and amplifies. The
sculptures reflect on the scale and absurdity of the machines in these systems while
experimenting with different materials and techniques. His work results in a broad spectrum
of concepts and approaches, while returning to footwear and wooden clogs as the primary
MODE OF TRANSPORT.

IN TRANSIT SERIES:
Metropolitan centers are surrounded by industrial settings such as ports, factories and other
visible components of global supply chain systems. These sculptures by Atelier TFL are
inspired by the various modes of transport pertaining to these environments.
The series TRANSPORTERS explore the ever-evolving relationship between humans and
machines. In the ongoing series all works carry cargo, the aluminium scale models of the 20
ft shipping containers are used as a reference to omnipresent global exchange.
The works are IN TRANSIT not only because they are transporting cargo, but also because
they are transiting from their natural state to a technological state, resonating with the
artist’s process. The foundation of these works is a wooden clog, a traditional Dutch shoe
with a rich history. In contemporary society, where our surreal technocratic society merges
man and machine together, the wooden clog is also merged into a new mode of transport.
