OVER DE KUNSTENAAR / ABOUT THE ARTIST

In his work, Rob Buelens (Londerzeel, 1989) reflects on human nature. His wondrous, refined scale models and sculptures explore typical human desires, fixations, and group dynamics. His work has a strong connection with the paintings of Flemish and Dutch masters like Jeroen Bosch and Bruegel, but is also affiliated with classic literary works such as ‘Gulliver’s Travels’ and ‘Utopia’. In these classical oeuvres, metaphors and persiflage are employed to reflect critically on the maker’s contemporary society. In a similar way, the poetic images of Buelens encourage the viewer to think about his or her own nature. By recontextualizing objects including weapons, sugar cubes and coffee mugs, the meaning of the works becomes ambiguous. In this way, Buelens creates room for introspection. Because the scale models are made on a very small scale, the viewer has an all-seeing, almost godlike perspective on the reality represented. The miniscule human figures that inhabit the scale models have no personal characteristics, making them recognizable only as part of a crowd, working together on a shared project. Without a readily identifiable situation or person as a focal point, the viewer is confronted with mankind as actors on their own stage.
