LOUISE HINDSGAVL

OVER DE KUNSTENAAR / ABOUT THE ARTIST

In her work, Louise Hindsgavl (Copenhagen, 1973) aims to offer a new interpretation of the classic porcelain figure. With her narrative sculptures, she explores the possibilities she feels the genre still offers today. In the ceramic tradition, porcelain figures are delicate and virtuous: expressions of an idealized world, a utopia. Hindsgavl presents us a contemporary counterpart of this imagined world. She plays with the expectations of the viewer, by creating porcelain figures that reflect mankind in all its facets. Fascinated by the dark side of mankind, she gives her figures a hint of the unexpected, the strange or even the violent. There is space for innocence and playfulness in her scenario’s, but also for anger, confusion and amorality. At the same time, her work maintains the elegant beauty and charming appeal associated with the classical porcelain figure. Her use of porcelain emphasizes the contrast between the pure, refined material and the raw aspects of the world she depicts.
