ANNA LANGE

These movies are part of a large project by Anna Lange, in which she expresses as a ‘masterproof’ her intimate relationship with landscape in different media as film, photography and neon. Her project Xenia started in the Sinai desert, where the poet withdrew herself ( after her adventure as Poetical Adviser at the Dutch Ministery of Culture )to reflect on her further course. She decided to use her home landscape as material for her ‘masterpiece’. As her master she choose Anselm Kiefer whom she met and who with a keen eye for symbols invited her to an artistical apology. This resulted in a series of images and a correspondence in essays. About the whole endeavour Anna Lange wrote in her publication Xenia, a Topophony.

XENIA I, II, III

Nederland | 2006 | 12 min. | 35mm | 1:1.66 | zwart/wit | anders| geen dialoog

Regie, camera, montage: Anna Lange
Compositie: Louis Andriessen
Viool en stem: Monica Germino
Productie: Mondriaan Fonds, Anna Lange

Direction, camera, editing: Anna Lange
Composition: Louis Andriessen
Violin and voice: Monica Germino
Production: Mondriaan Fonds, Anna Lange

This film project started with maps of the soul, that cover literal spots in Brabant as also synthetic fields of remembrance. When the etching-plates were ready, Anna Lange asked Louis Andriessen to draw tracks in it with the thought of a composition for violin and voice. The filmmaker ‘traveled’ along these basic scores and filmed for years on different locations in Brabant. This resulted among other movies in this triptych. Andriessen on his turn now finished his composition, that has three contrasting parts. Piece I, Sarabande, is a slow part of disturbed serenity, Caccia, the second piece, has the quick pace of a chase. The third piece, Song, is a dramatical movement in which the violist sings the last strophe from Arthur Rimbaud’s poem Voyelles.

This triptych is a key to the whole project. From the first period of the movie a worddrawing was extracted Drommend dromend, wolken romend and set in neon. From the second period the large neonsculpture Kakelatuur was derived

DE AARDAPPELETERS / SPACE POTATOES

Nederland | 2006 | 7 min. | 35mm | zwart/wit | zwijgend | geen dialoog

Regie, camera, montage: Anna Lange
Productie: Mondriaan Fonds, Anna Lange

Netherlands | 2006 | 7 min. | 35mm | black & white | silent | no dialogue

Director, photography, editing: Anna Lange
Production: Mondriaan Fonds, Anna Lange

The potato cult in the life of two old peasants at their farm. The filmmaker portrays a lost way of life which she was deeply influenced by. It is a tribute as well as a goodbye which puts things into perspective. Concerning us as much as the two humble characters.

CORPUS CHRISTI

Nederland | 2006 | 6 min. | 35mm | pal | kleur, zwart/wit | zwijgend | geen dialoog

Regie, camera, montage: Anna Lange
Productie: Mondriaan Fonds, Anna Lange

Netherlands | 2006 | 6 min. | 35mm | pal | colour, black & white | silent | no dialogue

Director, photography, editing: Anna Lange
Production: Mondriaan Fonds, Anna Lange

Once the filmmaker was told a story by an old nun about the monastery's host bakery and the pig they fattened with the waste and later consumed. In an almost documentary collage we experience a subtle play with associations on the theme of give and take, that in the end comes quite near to the secret of the Holy Communion.

ZWARTE MANEN / MOONS DARK

Nederland | 2007 | 1 min. | 35mm | 1:1.66 | zwart/wit | stereo | geen dialoog

Regie, camera, montage en geluid: Anna Lange
Productie: Mondriaan Fonds, Provincie Brabant, Anna Lange

Netherlands | 2007 | 1 min. | 35mm | 1:1.66 | black & white | stereo | no dialogue

Director, camera, editing and sound: Anna Lange
Production: Mondriaan Fonds, Provincie Brabant, Anna Lange

Moons Dark is a short movie born out of a severe fever from the filmer while visiting the Medici-chapel in Florence. The dark side of the moon - our dying - is shown as a state of lucidity. The film is embedded in two gradations of silence, wich were expressed in the two neon sculptures. SILENCIO proceeded the production of the movie. SILENCIO PROFUNDO arose after the film was finished.

By means of faction Anna Lange shows a double photographic portrait as a diptych.

Salve: Latin for greetings and welcome, his is also the title of a photographic portrait series by Anna Lange about a very wealthy art collector who lived like a tramp in his own house. In a filmic series of photos, we see a man who fervently stockpiles paintings in his large country house, where he clearly lives alone. The motivation for this manic urge to collect has nothing whatsoever to do with the artistic quality of the paintings, but is prompted purely by their anticipated market price. We are granted a view of the hollow universe of a miser who, in the end, quite literally goes up in flames with his entire collection.

The title Je t’aime was taken from a painting by someone who has clearly not painted for some time. This series deals with an artist who has lost his muse and is wasting away in melancholy. The total inertia of the main character is reinforced by his obsession with pornography. Anna lange does not judge, but makes us think about the damage that fixations can inflict on our lives. We bear witness to the loss af an ideal.
