Saskia Boelsums werd geboren in Nieuwer-Amstel in Nederland. Ze groeide op in Iran en Curaçao. Boelsums studeerde grafisch en ruimtelijk ontwerp aan de Academie Minerva in Groningen. Sinds 2013 richt ze zich op fotografie en kreeg ze een groot aantal nominaties en prijzen. Saskia is lid van GKf en DuPho en Canson Infinity Ambassador. Ze toont haar werk in wereldsteden als Amsterdam, Londen, Berlijn, Moskou, Hongkong en New York. Saskia woont en werkt in het rustieke, landelijke Zuidoost-Drenthe. Haar kunstwerken zijn opgenomen in verschillende kunstcollecties. Onlangs is ze verkozen tot Kunstenaar van het Jaar 2020, de meest gewaardeerde Nederlandse beeldend kunstenaar.

“Boelsums werkt overstijgt fotografie. Het zijn niet zozeer foto's, het zijn kunstwerken die ook verwijzen naar schilders. Die combinatie is magisch. Het is alsof ze fotografie gebruikt om te schilderen. Kijk naar de foto's. De manier waarop ze met kleur speelt. Is het een tekening? Is het grafische kunst? Voel het impressionistische gevoel, de artistieke kwaliteit. Dit alles maakt het een fantastisch werk om aan onze collectie toe te voegen. ”

“Betoverd door dezelfde landschappen die Paulus Potter, Van Ruisdael en Willem Maris inspireerden, deelt Saskia een gevoel, evenals haar onderwerp, met de beroemde Hollandse luchten, eenzame stranden en onmogelijk verwarde braambosvelden. Ze onthullen een vergelijkbare gevoeligheid voor ruimte, licht en textuur, die ze jarenlang heeft gecultiveerd als installatiekunstenaar. Saskia vat haar uitgestrekte horizonten en woeste landschappen binnen de strenge formele grenzen van het vierkant. Het vierkant is puur. Het vierkant is modern. Het vierkant is de basiseenheid van The Grid en, als de bepalende vorm van ons Instagram-tijdperk, het is het frame waardoor velen van ons nu de wereld zien en ervaren. Saskia geniet van de beperkingen die het vierkant oplegt en daagt zichzelf uit bij elk werk om het echte (en het magische) binnen de meest rationele vormen te vangen. '

Saskia Boelsums was born in Nieuwer-Amstel in the Netherlands. She grew up in Iran and Curacao. Boelsums studied Graphic and Spatial Design at the Academy Minerva in Groningen, the Netherlands. “Enchanted by the same landscapes that inspired Paulus Potter, Van Ruisdael and Willem Maris, Saskia shares a sensibility, as well as her subject matter, with the great Dutch skies, lonely beaches, and impossibly tangled bramble fields reveal a similar sensitivity to space, light and texture, wich she cultivated over years of working as an installation artist. Saskia neatly contains all of her expansive horizons and wild landscapes within the rigorous formal boundaries of the square. The square is pure. The square is modern. The square is the basic unit of The Grid and, as the defining shape of our Instagram age, it is the frame through wich many of us now see and experience the world. Reveling in the constraints imposed by the square, Saskia challenges herself with each work to capture the real (and the magical) within the most rational forms.”
