Hans Withoos studeerde van 1983 tot 1989 aan de Academie voor Beeldende Kunst in Tilburg in Nederland. Daarna begon hij aan een zeer succesvolle carrière als fotograaf in de reclame en mode. In de afgelopen 20 jaar maakte hij zowel werk in opdracht als zijn eigen kunst. Hoewel hij een zeer succesvol fotograaf is met cliënten in Brazilië, Spanje, Italië, de Verenigde Staten en Marokko, heeft hij altijd tijd gemaakt voor zijn eigen kunst. Door de jaren heen heeft hij een groot aantal fotoseries gemaakt, opgenomen op locaties over de hele wereld.

Hans is gefascineerd door schoonheid in al haar aspecten: de schoonheid van het drama, van het lichaam en het licht, en de schoonheid van het lijden, zoals te zien is in zijn serie ‘Nocturnal Delight’, gebaseerd op de zeven hoofdzonden.

Uit zijn series ‘New Romantics’ en ‘Lady with her Golden Toys’ spreekt zijn fascinatie voor de schoonheid van de kracht, en zijn nieuwste serie stillevens ‘Withoos meets Withoos’ gaat over de schoonheid van de symboliek. Net als in al zijn ander werk, komt ook in deze stillevens zijn dramatische gebruik van licht en de gelaagdheid die zo kenmerkend voor hem is, duidelijk naar voren.

De fotografie van Hans Withoos speelt zich af in een wereld van overvloed en gekunsteldheid, die hinten naar decadentie. Het is een wereld die tegelijkertijd vreemd en vertrouwd is. De figuren in zijn beelden worden archetypes, die de toeschouwer een gevoel van vervreemding geven. Zijn werk is gelaagd, met zorgvuldig in scène gezette beelden en een idiosyncratische esthetiek. Sommige beelden roepen emoties op, zoals lijden, sensualiteit en beklemming; andere zijn dan weer ontdaan van elke emotie. Zoals Hans Withoos zegt: “De beelden tonen geen kritisch perspectief, maar zijn beschouwend.” 

Over zijn manier van werken zegt hij: “Ik krijg een idee en ga dan op zoek naar de juiste locatie, de modellen en de styling, en terwijl ik die combineer tot het uiteindelijke beeld, blijf ik openstaan voor verandering, verbetering en nieuwe ideeën. Ja, het is in scène gezette fotografie. Maar zelfs voor mij zijn er altijd verrassingen, onverwachte elementen. Na de opnames ga ik tewerk als een schilder: ik leg de beelden zorgvuldig in lagen over elkaar, en creëer het eindresultaat in mijn hoofd en op de computer. Het kan weken duren voor een beeld eindelijk af is.” Dat is duidelijk te zien in de serie ‘Withoos meets Withoos’, waarin Hans Withoos uitgaat van de werken van zijn voorvader, de 17de-eeuwse kunstschilder Matthias Withoos, die hij gebruikt als de achtergrond voor zijn eigen beelden. Zo worden heden en verleden naadloos met elkaar verweven tot een nieuw werk waarin twee kunstenaars elkaar ontmoeten.

Hans Withoos studied at the Academy of Visual Arts in Tilburg, The Netherlands, from 1983 to 1989, and then embarked on a highly successful career as a photographer in the commercial and fashion world. Over the past 20 years, he has happily combined commissioned work with his own art. Although he is a highly successful international photographer with clients in Brazil, Spain, Italy, the United States and Morocco, he has always found time for his own art. Over the years, he has produced numerous photographic series, shot in locations all over the world.

Hans is fascinated by beauty in all its aspects: the beauty of drama, of the body and of light, as well as the beauty of suffering, as is shown in his series ‘Nocturnal Delight’ based on the seven deadly sins.

His series ‘New Romantics’ and ‘Lady with her Golden Toys’ show his fascination with the beauty of strength, and his latest series of still lifes, ‘Withoos meets Withoos’ is all about the beauty of symbolism. Like all his other work, his still lifes show his dramatic use of light and the layering that are his signature style.

The photography of Hans Withoos is set in a world of abundance and artifice, suggesting a certain decadence It is a world that is both alien and familiar. The figures that crowd his images become archetypes, leaving the viewer with a sense of alienation. His work is multi-layered, with carefully staged images and an idiosyncratic aesthetic. The images sometimes evoke emotions such as suffering, sensuality and oppressiveness; at other times they are deliberately devoid of any emotion at all. As Hans Withoos says: “The images don’t show a critical perspective, but rather an observant one.”

About his work method, he explains: “I come up with an idea and then go looking for the right location, the models and the styling, and while I combine them to make the final image, I am still open to change, improvement and new ideas. Yes, it is staged photography. But even for me, there are always surprises in my work, an element of the unexpected. After the shooting, I then work like a painter, carefully layering the images, creating the final image in my mind and on my computer. It can take weeks before a picture is finally completed.”. This can clearly be seen in the series ‘Withoos meets Withoos’, in which Hans Withoos is inspired by the paintings of his ancestor, 17th century artist Matthias Withoos. He uses them as a background for his own images, seamlessly combining past and present to a new artwork in which two artists meet.
