DOLPH KESSLER

  • Dolph Kessler (1950)  is een Nederlandse fotograaf. Hij woont in Friesland. Eind 2006 studeerde hij af met een fotoserie over internationale kunstbeurzen.

  • Naast het vastleggen van de 'condition humaine' (de moderne mens in zijn sociale en culturele hedendaagse context), fotografeert Kessler landschappen en is hij gefascineerd door de betekenis die aan landschap en natuur wordt gegeven. Daarnaast onderzoekt hij het gebied tussen autonome en documentaire fotografie.

OVER DE KUNSTENAAR / ABOUT THE ARTIST

Dolph Kessler (Amsterdam 1950) is sinds 2006 documentair  fotograaf. Na een carrière als stedenbouwkundige, planoloog en wethouder van Leeuwarden heeft hij van 2003 – 2006 de Fotoacademie in Amsterdam gevolgd. Hij publiceert regelmatig foto's in tijdschriften en kranten. Naast het vastleggen van de 'condition humaine' (de moderne mens in zijn sociale en culturele hedendaagse context), fotografeert hij landschappen en is gefascineerd door de betekenis die aan landschap en natuur wordt gegeven.  

De afgelopen 8 jaar werkte aan drie lange termijn projecten. In 2009 verscheen zijn fotoboek Art Fairs. Met een selectie van de foto’s uit dit boek won hij een eerste prijs bij de Zilveren Camera 2009 (categorie Kunst en Cultuur). Het fotoboek de Noordzee rond gaat over de Noordzee kust van Europa en was te zien op internationale foto festivals als foto festival Naarden en Noorderlicht. 
Het fotoboek, Lviv, stad van paradoxen is zijn laatste lange termijn project over een stad in West Oekraïne (2014). De foto’s die hij tijdens de tentoonstelling laat zien zijn van een deel project hiervan getiteld Passengers. Zijn portretten van passagiers in de tram’s en bussen van Lviv zijn fascinerend. De passagiers lijken ons te bekijken vanachter beslagen ruiten. De gesloten wereld in de voertuigen doet afvragen wie deze vreemden zijn: waar denken ze aan, en wat denken ze van mij? Ze blijven echter vreemden, vastgelegd in een moment, een cultuur en een geschiedenis.

Dolph Kessler (Amsterdam 1950) has worked as documentary photographer since 2006. After a career as urban planner and municipal councilor, he attended the Fotoacademie in Amsterdam. He regularly publishes photos in magazines and newspapers. Besides being a photographer of the ‘condition humaine’ (the modern man in the social and cultural context of today), he is a landscape photographer who is fascinated by the meanings and significances given to landscape and nature. 

During the last 8 years he worked on three long term projects. In 2009 the book Art Fairs was published. He went on to win first prize when a selection of these photos was entered into the Art, Culture and Entertainment section of the annual Dutch photographic competition, de Zilveren Camera 2009. The photobooks Around the North Sea (2012) is about the North sea coast of Europa. Photo’s of this book were shown on international photofestivals, like Photofestival Naarden and Noorder licht (Northern Light). The photobook Lviv, city of paradoxes is his last long term project about a town in Western Ukraine. Photo’s shown during the exhibition are from a “side” project called “passengers”. His portraits in the busses and trams, documents his fascination with the trams in Lviv. The passengers seem to observe us from behind fogged windows. The closed-off world inside the vehicles makes one wonder who these strangers are: what are they thinking of, and what do they think of us? However, they remain strangers, captured in a moment, a culture and a history.
