DARK CAMERAS

Dark Cameras

An experimental investigation into the optical possibilities of the traditional craft of glassblowing. Together with glassblowers Geir Nustad and Josja Caecilia Schepman and others at the Glaslab Leerdam. Van Bakel creates dark cameras totally made of glass, a giant Walk-in Camera Obscura and various ‘water lenses’ that breathe new life into ancient techniques.

OVER DE KUNSTENAAR / ABOUT THE ARTIST

Michiel van Bakel (Deurne, 1966) studied astronomy and psychology for several years before he switched to the art academy in Arnhem. During his study classical sculpting, Van Bakel became fascinated by the interrelationship between art, technology and science – a fascination he shares with his father, sculptor and furniture designer Gerrit van Bakel (1943-1984). From the 1970s Van Bakel senior made his machine-like installations through which he explored the interrelationship between nature, technology, poetry and conscience. In his work Michiel van Bakel also explores the relation between human beings and their environment. However, his sculptures, films, photographs and multimedia-installations are characterized by a distinctly technical approach. He uses experimental video and animation techniques to capture frozen moments of time from a dynamic perspective and from different spatial angles. This results in a poetic reality in which he explores the human perception of time, disorientation, and instability. His work was awarded the first prize  at the Black Maria Film Festival (United States) and a special jury prize  at VideoLisboa (Portugal). Van Bakel lives and works in Rotterdam.
