OVER DE KUNSTENAAR / ABOUT THE ARTIST

Antonio Janevski (Veles, 1991) is vertegenwoordiger van de nieuwe generatie schilders uit Macedonië. Zijn indrukwekkende schilderijen komen voort uit een voortdurend creatief en intellectueel onderzoek. Als kunstenaar-onderzoeker deconstrueert hij de praktijk in zijn atelier, waarbij hij zijn keuzes – selecties, aanpassingen, werkwijzen, en manieren van kijken – steeds bevraagt. Janevski’s werkwijze getuigt van een grote toewijding en fascinatie voor de kunsten. Als medewerker van archeologische opgravingen en door praktijkervaring op te doen bij o.a. een gerenommeerd collectief frescoschilders, raakte hij vertrouwd met zowel de klassieke Macedonische traditie als de hedendaagse kunstscene. Janevski wil een dialoog met de kunstcriticus aangaan door werk te maken dat vragen, ideeën, gevoelens, en impulsen belichaamt. Terugkerend onderwerp in zijn schilderkunst is de natuur, het enige element in de menselijke leefwereld dat niet om duiding of interpretatie vraagt. Hierdoor wordt het onderwerp van het werk overstegen en worden emoties en vragen direct gecommuniceerd aan de toeschouwer.

Antonio Janevski (Veles, 1991) represents the new generation painters from Macedonia. His impressive paintings are the result of a continuous creative and intellectual investigation. As an artist-researcher, he deconstructs his studio practice, examining and questioning all his decisions – selections, adaptations, ways of working, and ways of seeing. Janevski’s approach is testimony to his dedication and fascination for art. By working on archaeological excavations and attending painting practice with a.o. a well-established collective of fresco-artists, he became intimately familiar with both the classical Macedonian tradition and the contemporary art scene. It is Janevski’s aim to enter a dialogue with the art critic by making work that embodies questions, ideas, feelings and impulses. Nature is a recurring topic in his paintings, as it is the one element from our living environment that does not require clarification or interpretation. Hereby, the topic of the work is transcended, and the emotions and questions are directly communicated to the viewer.
