De kunstenaar / 
The artist

​Stijn Belle (1983, Tilburg) studeerde in 2018 cum laude af aan de Fotoacademie Amsterdam. Met zijn indrukwekkende fotografie onderzoekt hij de dunne scheidslijn tussen leven en sterven. Gedreven door een bewustzijn van zijn eigen sterfelijkheid, wil hij in het reine komen met zijn angst voor de dood. In de visie van Belle is sterven inherent aan het leven en de angst om er niet meer te zijn fundamenteel aan het leven zelf. Met zijn fotografie kijkt Belle de dood recht in de ogen. Bewust gaat hij op zoek naar de schaduwkanten van het bestaan. Hij confronteert zichzelf met ziekte en verval, dode lichamen, pijn en radioactiviteit; een rauw leven zonder zekerheden. Zijn onderzoek legt hij vast in transgressieve, maar poëtische beelden die zowel het onvermijdelijke einde, als Belle’s intieme angst voor dit einde verbeelden.
 
Stijn Belle (1983, Tilburg) graduated with honours from the photo academy in Amsterdam in 2018. With his impressive photography, he explores the thin line between living and dying. Driven by the knowledge of his own mortality, he aims to come to terms with his fear of death. In Belle’s view, dying is inherent to life and the fear of passing away is central to life itself. With his photography, Belle looks death straight in the eye. He goes out of his way to search for the dark aspects of existence, confronting himself with disease and decay, dead bodies, pain and radioactivity; a raw life without certainties. He captures this research in transgressive but poetic images that represent both the inevitable end, and Belle’s intimate fear of it.
